Our Data Security and Protection eLearning course for Data Security and Protection Leads provides knowledge and understanding relevant to the responsibilities of the role and will support you in improving the data protection and cyber security of your organisation. There are four modules, each should take approx. 20 minutes to complete. You can work your way through all or just some of the modules.
Module 1: Data protection rights and responsibilities

- Be able to differentiate and describe other specialist roles for data security and protection
- Know whether you have suitable skills and support to fulfil the Data Security and Protection Lead role

- Understand your role in managing information within your organisation
- Understand how your organisation can protect individuals’ rights about their personal data
- Be able to keep data safe and store it securely, including managing who has access to it
- Recognise the importance of policies and procedures in supporting good data security practice
- Understand the purpose of an Information Asset Register (IAR) and what information to include
- Know how to monitor data security and protection practice
- Understand the purpose of a Data Protection Impact Assessment and know when to complete one
Module 3: Threats to data security

By the end of this module, you should:
- Recognise the potential impact of a cyber incident
- Know how to be better prepared and recover quicker in case of a cyber incident
- Know what basic cyber security steps to take to reduce threats to data security
- Know how to minimise risks of digital systems and devices
- Understand how to reduce risks in your digital supply chain
Module 4: Data breaches
10 minutes to complete
- Understand the difference between a data breach and a data security incident or near miss
- Recognise the importance of recording and learning from all data security incidents
- Know how to respond if a data breach happens
- Know when and how to report a notifiable data breach
