Care Workers’ Charity release guidance and statement of expectations on responsible use of AI in social care

September 18th 2024

On 1st February 2024, representatives from 30 organisations from across social care met at Reuben College, University of Oxford, to engage in the first of a series of landmark roundtable discussions on the responsible use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) within adult social care. Following this, frontline care workers from England, Wales, and Scotland, coordinated by the Care Worker’s Charity and Digital Care Hub, came together to discuss this topic and ensure that the voices of care workers are shaping this work.

This week, the Care Workers’ Charity have released the ‘Care Workers’ Guidance and Statement of Expectations on the Responsible Use of AI and Particularly Generative AI in Adult Social Care.’ This  document, informed by the roundtable discussions, offers key principles and recommendations for AI developers, employers, policymakers, local authorities, regulators, and care workers themselves.

Katie Thorn, Project Lead at Digital Care Hub, said:
The launch of the care workers’ guidance and statement of expectations is an important moment in ensuring that AI serves as a tool to uplift, rather than replace, the person-centred care that remains at the heart of our sector. Digital Care Hub is proud to advocate for responsible AI practices that prioritise the dignity and well-being of both care workers and the people they support.”
