Trust is the cornerstone of any AI implementation in social care. Both care workers and those receiving care must trust that AI is there to support them, and that their privacy and human rights are respected. Review of actions is a central tenet of the FAIR model. In AI, this aligns with the principle of trust. Trust requires continuous engagement, listening, accountability and responsiveness to concerns.

Case Example:

A care provider was considering introducing an AI-powered system to monitor residents’ movement in a dementia care unit, aiming to reduce falls. Some family members were concerned that this surveillance would be invasive and could infringe on their loved ones’ privacy. To build trust, the care provider involved families in the review process, explaining how the data would be used and offering reassurance that the AI would support the human carers, not replace them. This open dialogue created a sense of shared responsibility and trust, demonstrating that technology could be used in a way that respects privacy while improving safety.
